An Education Resource for Northern Ireland Schools

Facing History and Ourselves - Studying the Holocaust and Human Behaviour

A resource for post-primary schools in Northern Ireland to study the Holocaust within the context of the new curriculum for learning and teaching in history has been produced in conjunction with the NI Interboard History Forum. Its key aim is to produce an educational programme for the teaching of the Holocaust suitable for Year 10 pupils. The resource comprises a teaching booklet and a DVD which includes interviews with Holocaust survivors sharing their experiences.
  • The new curriculum provides statements of statutory requirements within which the study of the Holocaust will offer students a model to study the past and examine the links that history provides us to meet the challenges posed by an increasingly interconnected world.
  • The lesson material will look at how moral and ethical dilemmas challenge our views and perceptions of the world and the difficult choices that young people make daily.
  • The resource aims to ensure that pupils learn about the Holocaust not only in terms of history but how they might apply their understanding of it directly to their lives. This will help young people make informed and responsible choices and decisions in relation to how they view and treat others.
  • Learning lessons from the past, such as those of the Holocaust, help young people to develop as individuals and as contributors to society with respect for human rights.
