2007 Crocus Project
Primary schools in Northern Ireland were invited to participate in The Crocus Project, in association with the Holocaust Educational Trust of Ireland.
The Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister provided free of charge to all participating schools a project pack consisting of yellow crocus bulbs and Project Guidelines.
Background
The project is intended for pupils aged eleven in Primary school and aims to introduce them to the subject of the Holocaust. It raises awareness and stimulates discussion about the dangers of discrimination, prejudice and intolerance.
Participating schools plant crocus bulbs in the Autumn in memory of all the children who died in the Holocaust and as a result of Nazi persecution. The yellow flowers recall the yellow star all Jews were forced to wear under Nazi rule. If planted in October, the crocus blooms at the end of January - in time for Holocaust Memorial Day (27 January).
The project lends itself to many other activities such as essay writing, diary keeping, art projects, school newspaper articles and so on.
